About Vanessa
Sandy brown with balayage running lighter through the lengths, long and slightly undone: Vanessa's hair looks like three days on a boat and takes about twenty minutes. Height 173 cm, the build slim, and hazel eyes that go green or grey depending on what she is wearing, which she knows perfectly well. Her clothes are understated and well made, a silk shirt, wide trousers, a trench coat that has been somewhere. She has the easy carriage of a woman who has spent a lot of her life in airports and has stopped finding them stressful.
At 25 she is unflappable, dry and good at the end of a long journey. She is soft spoken in English, which makes people lean in. She travels constantly and is the only person on this roster who can tell you the running order of every terminal she has passed through this year. She likes maps, timetables and anything that runs on a schedule. She is calm about delays, blunt about excuses, and she never once makes anyone feel bad for arriving tired.
Out here she takes Royal Albert Dock, a kilometre and a half of water with the runway along its southern edge, where the approach lights run out into the basin and an aircraft comes over the water every few minutes at a height that makes first time visitors duck. She likes the quay at dusk with the lights coming on down the length of it. Supper is nearby or back at the Wharf in twenty minutes. She lives in Paddington, and this run has been simple since the Elizabeth line opened.

An evening with Vanessa
She is the right company for the evening that begins with a flight, because she has had several hundred of them and does not expect you to be sparkling at seven. The dock is a kilometre and a half of flat water with the runway along one side, and standing on the north quay at dusk you get an aircraft over the basin every few minutes, low, lit, and closer than anybody is ready for. The first one always gets a reaction. She will give you twenty minutes of that and no conversation you have to work at. Then supper, either five minutes away or twenty back at the Wharf, and by the second course she has usually got you talking about something that has nothing to do with the trip at all.

When are you back in London?
End of next week. I travel a great deal and the desk keeps the real dates, so nothing is promised that cannot be kept.
Is the dock actually worth standing on?
Twenty minutes at dusk with the approach lights on and a plane every few minutes over the water. It costs nothing and people talk about it for weeks.
What if my flight is late?
Then it is late. Send one line when you land and the start time moves. I have never once been annoyed by a delay I was told about.
