E14 in walk minutes: Canary Wharf, the Isle of Dogs, Limehouse

One postcode, three districts and about forty minutes of walking end to end. This page is the index for E14: what sits where, how long it takes to move between them, and which district page to open next.

The three have almost nothing in common beyond a letter and a number, which is precisely why they are worth reading together before deciding where an evening should happen.

One of them works from E14 itself, and the other 5 are a district or two away on the same arrival window. Any of the 28 in the desk can be asked for by name instead.

The three districts, in order

Canary Wharf is the middle of the postcode and the reason for the rest of it: the estate, Canada Square, Wood Wharf and the five hotels around them. The Isle of Dogs runs south from the footbridge to Island Gardens, mostly residential towers along Marsh Wall and Millharbour. Limehouse holds the north west corner, low brick around a basin, and is older than either by two centuries.

On foot, the Wharf to the top of the island is seven minutes and the Wharf to Limehouse Basin about eighteen. By DLR the same two journeys are two minutes and four. Nothing in this postcode is far from anything else, and no booking inside it carries a fare.

Where the beds are

Hotels cluster in two places. Around the estate: the riverside one at E14 8RS, the quay one at E14 4ED and the newest, on the estate itself. Across the dock on Marsh Wall: the broad block at E14 9SH and the tall tower at E14 9TP, both technically on the island.

Everything else in E14 is flats, and there are a great many of them. We work to a building, a floor and a number exactly as we work to a room, and no hotel listed on this site has any relationship with this desk beyond appearing on a confirmation.

Choosing where the evening sits

Want a table and height, book the estate. Want quiet and a short journey, the island. Want somewhere that feels four miles further out than it is, Limehouse. All three are Zone 2 and all three share one ladder, which begins at £250 for an hour and runs to £1,800 overnight on rates.

Molly and Sonya are anchored across the postcode and work all three districts, with the full board on the desk. The next pages east and south are Royal Docks and ExCeL and Greenwich. The steps to a confirmed evening are on booking.

Before you write

Asked about E14

Is E14 all one fare area?

Yes. The whole postcode is Zone 2 and travel within Zones 1 and 2 is inside every figure we quote. A fare appears only further east in E16, and even there it is written into the confirmation before you agree.

Which district is easiest to reach late?

Limehouse, because the road tunnel from the City lands almost on top of it. The estate is next. The south of the island is slowest once the DLR stops, adding roughly ten minutes.

Can one booking cover two of the three?

Often. Seven minutes separates the estate from the island and eighteen from Limehouse, so two hours at £500 can hold a table in one and a walk in another. Say the plan when you write so the length fits it.

Do you cover the new towers at Wood Wharf?

Yes, on the same terms as every other address in the postcode. Give the building, the core and the floor. Several have more than one entrance, so name the one you want her to use.

One message is enough

Send the room and the hour

Write the district, the time and the length of the booking. The desk answers with a name and an arrival window, and the evening is set.
