About Nancy
Golden blonde is a colour that either works or does not, and on Nancy it works: long, heavy and worn simply, with blue eyes underneath it and very little makeup doing very much. Height 170 cm, the figure curvy, and she dresses it rather than hides it: wrap dresses, good coats, a heel high enough to matter and low enough to walk a cobbled street in. At 30 she has the unhurried presence of someone who long ago stopped auditioning.
She is warm, straightforward and more interested in you than in the room. Her English is generous: she asks follow up questions and remembers the answers a week later. Painting is the private passion, badly and happily, mostly watercolour, mostly rivers. She has a low tolerance for rudeness and a high one for silence. People tend to tell her things they had not planned to tell anyone, and she is entirely trustworthy with it, which is not a small thing in a city this talkative.
Greenwich is where she takes people who think they know London. The Painted Hall inside the Old Royal Naval College, forty thousand square feet of ceiling that took one man nineteen years, and she will lie back on one of the mirrored trolleys and look at it for a quarter of an hour without saying anything. Afterwards it is eight minutes to the river wall and the pubs along it. Covent Garden is home, and she comes by DLR in about twenty minutes with a book she does not open.

An evening with Nancy
She will ask for an earlier start than most, because the ceiling has to be seen in daylight hours and she refuses to rush it. Inside, the room is absurd in the best way: nineteen years of one painter's life on a ceiling built for retired sailors, and a trolley with a mirror on it so you can look up without ruining your neck. She lies on it. She expects you to as well. Afterwards there is the walk out past the colonnades to the river wall, where the water is wide and brown and the Wharf stands on the far bank like a completely different country. Supper is along the front, and by then the conversation has usually stopped being polite and started being interesting.

Why that ceiling?
Because a man spent nineteen years on his back painting it for sailors, and almost nobody in London has looked at it. Twenty minutes and you will not forget it.
Afternoon or evening?
Start at four if you want the hall. After that Greenwich belongs to the river, and the evening takes care of itself.
Do you mind quiet company?
Not at all. Some of the best hours I have spent here were mostly silent, and neither of us apologised for it afterwards.
