About Patricia

The hair is auburn brown and long, the sort of colour that changes twice between a street lamp and a candle, and Patricia has learned to let rooms do the work. Height 172 cm, the build slim, brown eyes, and the straight back of someone who has spent years being looked at without minding it. Her style is understated and slightly severe: a dark dress, a coat that holds its shape, and never more than one thing that shines. Next to the glass towers she reads as the older, better made object in the frame.

At 28 she is composed, observant and funnier than her first five minutes suggest. She is careful in English, which people mistake for reserve until she says something extremely dry at exactly the wrong moment. History is the real enthusiasm, particularly the criminal sort, and she has a collection of facts about this stretch of the river that she deploys sparingly and always well. She is unimpressed by expense and very impressed by anyone who has read something recently.

Wapping is her choice and the anchor is The Captain Kidd on Wapping High Street, a warehouse conversion with a stone floor, a beer garden on the water and a name taken from a man they hanged three hundred metres away at Execution Dock. She takes the upstairs window when it is free. Afterwards there is the walk east along the old wharf fronts, six or seven minutes, every building still carrying the name of what it once held. Belgravia is home, and the cab east takes her a little over twenty minutes.

The old river streets are covered on the Wapping page. An hour begins at £250, with the longer evenings on rates. Send booking a date and a meeting point comes back.

Booking her evening

The pub, the walk and a table with no clock watching come to £700 over three hours; a long drink and the river wall alone fit inside £500. Maude confirms exactly where to meet, since a dark street is no place for guesswork.

Her figures are the desk figures, printed in full on the rates page, and the whole arrangement runs in one thread from the first line to the confirmation.

An evening with Patricia

The pub is four hundred years of story in a building that has been rebuilt more than once, with a stone floor, low beams and a terrace hanging over the water. She takes the upstairs window if it is free and points across at the spot where they used to chain a body to a post and let three tides go over it, and she tells you this while holding a very good whisky and not smiling. The tide slides past underneath. Later there is the walk along Wapping High Street with the old wharves shut and black on both sides, their names still painted twenty feet up, and it is genuinely one of the strangest walks in London at nine at night. From there it is twelve minutes back to the Wharf, or nowhere at all.

Before you write

Patricia, in her own words

Execution Dock is real?

Entirely real, and three hundred metres from where we will be sitting. They hanged pirates there and left them for three tides. Wapping does not advertise it much.

Is the walk safe at night?

Perfectly, and it is nearly empty, which is why I like it. Bring shoes that have no opinion about cobbles.

Pub rather than a restaurant?

For the first hour, always. A room with four centuries in it beats a room with a view of one, and dinner can wait until half past nine.

Remarks

What guests have written

Nothing is written here for Patricia yet, which is usually what discretion looks like in E14. A note appears only when a guest writes one, she agrees to it, and the desk has checked that it reads as a first name, a month and nothing private.
