About Laura
Sun has done something to Laura's hair that no salon manages convincingly, taking long light brown to something closer to bronze at the ends. She is 169 cm, athletic, and moves like someone who has never in her life taken the lift for one floor. The eyes are green and they are the first thing people mention. She dresses accordingly, structured rather than fussy, a wool coat over something simple, and she will happily swap heels for flats in a doorway if the plan involves a wind coming off the dock, which in E16 it usually does.
At 25 she is direct company: cheerful, competitive, allergic to small talk that goes nowhere. Her English is fast and unornamented. She runs four mornings a week and is honest that it is as much about her head as her legs. She likes maps, cold weather and any conversation that eventually involves a decision. What she does not like is being managed, so she is much better company when the plan is shared than when it is sprung on her.
Out east she heads for Thames Barrier Park, five minutes on foot from Pontoon Dock on the DLR and the only place on this side of the river where the silver hoods of the Barrier stand in a line in front of you. The sunken garden is best about an hour before dark. Afterwards it is a short ride back up to the dock road for supper, or straight across to the Wharf if your evening is anchored there. Paddington is home, and the Elizabeth line has turned that from an expedition into a straightforward forty minutes.

Booking her evening
A walk and a table together need three hours at £700. If the evening stays in one building, £500 buys the two hour version. Tell the desk whether you want to be outside and Maude will set the start time against sunset.

An evening with Laura
Her preferred version begins outdoors and she will say so plainly. Pontoon Dock at about half past four in winter, a five minute walk, then the sunken garden with its clipped green waves and the Barrier standing out in the water beyond it like something left behind by a better funded century. She walks fast and talks faster, and she will ask what you are actually trying to get done this year. It gets cold quickly on that bank, which is the point: by the time you are back indoors the evening has already started rather than waiting to. Supper is nearby or back west, whichever suits the diary, and she is easy about either. Her one firm rule is that if the walk is in the plan, the shoes have to be honest about it.

Is the Barrier actually worth seeing?
Ten steel hoods holding back the North Sea, and almost nobody there. Yes. It is the best twenty minutes in E16.
How do you get out that far?
Jubilee line to Canning Town, then the DLR two stops to Pontoon Dock, or a cab from the Wharf in about fifteen minutes. It is nearer than people assume.
What ruins an evening for you?
Being told at the last minute that the plan has changed twice. Change it once and I will keep up with you all night.
